PROGNOSIS
Unfortunately for horses infected with equine infectious anemia virus, the prognosis is not ideal. The virus can be fatal; however, a horse can periodically “recover” from it also. In these cases the recovered horse will carry the virus for life, and may suffer from sporadic outbreaks. There is no cure or treatment for animals infected with the virus. The CFIA may demand euthanasia or, in some cases, lifelong quarantine (see "Prevention and Control" for details). Supportive therapy may be utilized to help alleviate clinical signs; however one must remember that any horse infected with EIAV is a reservoir of the virus and thereby jeopardizes the health of other horses that may come into contact (CFIA 2012).
